Portable Generator Maintenance

Set a reminder to check on these regular maintenance items for your portable generator, plus anything recommended in your owner’s manual.

 

Regular (Daily, Weekly)
Check your fuel and oil levels to make sure your generator stays running. Keep the area around your generator free of debris or anything that could block proper airflow to and from the generator. Monitor for signs of corrosion to the exterior.
Monthly
Check your air filters and spark plugs, and charge your battery if necessary. Check fuel lines for wear and tear. Run the generator at least once per month if you aren’t using it more frequently.
Annually / Bi-Annually
Perform a load test on the generator to gauge performance and remedy any alerts or issues you see at that point.

Measure the fuel, oil, and coolant levels. Then, run the generator and see if any alerts pop up. Keep the area around your generator free of debris or anything that could block proper airflow to and from the generator. Monitor for signs of corrosion to the exterior.
Monthly
Inspect your generator’s battery and charging system it came with for leaks or corrosion. Check for excess wear and tear on belts. Feel the length of the different hoses for any ruptures or issues. Remove the fuel tank and empty built-up water and sediment.
Annually/Bi-Annually
Check the ignition, alternator, spark plugs, and transfer switch. Replace or repair as needed. Perform a load test on the generator to gauge performance and remedy any alerts or issues you see at that point.
