When it comes to deciding on a portable generator, the question of fuel type is always a major consideration. Should you pick a dual fuel or a gasoline powered model? Well, here we have broken down some of the pros and cons of each to help you make a more informed decision.
Portability is one factor pertaining to these units. When you go with a dual fuel model like the Duromax XP13000EH, you can count on a little more weight meaning it will not be as easy to transport. Don’t get us wrong, these units typically have handles and are wheeled, so this is really a not factor.
Gas powered units of the same compared size, like the Duromax XP130000E are not only lighter, but cost a bit less too.
Portability also must be considered when it comes to the fuel supply as well. When you are running the unit on gas—they are no different than a gas-powered unit, but switch over to propane, and like a propane grill--- the dual fuel unit must be tethered to a propane tank to run. So, keep in mind, you will now have to items to pull around or reconnect when you get to your location, vs just pushing start and get rolling.
Energy output is the other biggest pro and con decider of the dual fuel vs gas unit debate. Yes, propane is cleaner, and greener if you will, than gasoline, but propane and natural gas, for example, have a lower energy output than gasoline. The deficit is not a significant concern as the energy output will increase once you switch back to gasoline, but a 15% to 25% decrease is to be expected when running on propane or natural gas.
As briefly mentioned earlier, cost is also a concern, but not as important as portability or energy loss when switching between the two fuels. Yes, a gas-powered unit that can supply the same amount of power as a dual fuel will typically run $100 to $300 less depending on the size, brand, etc. So now imagine running propane and that unit that costs $200 more for example, not only costs more but produces 15% less than the total watts advertised with gas.
As with any fancy car, the more features and moving parts, the more chances your generator could breakdown or need service. A dual fuel unit will need more TLC as it is a more complex unit, and more things can go wrong. The fuel type instructions and mixture operations can be confusing to some users. To avoid the hassle of interpreting complex calculations and setup instructions, you can choose the simple single fuel types.
Everything isn’t perfect with single fuel generators though. Obviously, storing large amounts of fuel is less economical and gasoline deteriorates over time. With gasoline in the event of a natural disaster, you will have to count on a gas station to refill. The good news there, most gas stations have backup generators to continue operation when power goes out. If you do not live near a “modern” gas station, then a propane tank swap might be the only option.
So overall, with the two Duromax examples we offered, there is only a $100 difference and about a 10-pound difference with the dual fuel being more expensive and heavier. So, it really comes down to what type of fuel works best for you. If you are willing to accept the power dip with propane and you already use propane for other items around the house, well then, you understand what propane entails. Dual fuel might be the best option as having that option could mean everything in an extended power outage crisis. I would rather have slightly reduced power than run out of gas.
